Producer story

JH Meyer

JH Meyer, Carbonic 2017, Pinot Noir, Elgin, South Africa

Johan Meyer was named one of the ‘Top Ten South African Winemakers to Watch’ at the age of 28. Since then, he has continued to make his mark as one of South Africa’s most promising talents, producing terroir-focused wines in the cooler regions of the southern Cape.

His love for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in particular, stemmed from working in vineyards across New Zealand and California, and it was after his travels that he realised there was huge potential for both grapes in South Africa. And so began JH Meyer Wines.

Johan produces delicious hand-crafted, small batches of unfiltered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, from grapes grown in Elgin, Outeniqua and Elandskloof. He also co-founded the ‘Mother Rock’ label with Ben Henshaw, initially to bring a well-made, accessible Chenin to the UK market and ultimately, to showcase South Africa’s best vines and versatile terroir.

We adore JH Meyer’s lightly sparkling Carbonic Pinot Noir and Mother Rock Liquid Skin Chenin Blanc – both are firm favourites on our wine list, so pop in and try them.
